    In all publishing contracts, the author receives a percentage on each book sold. It generally varies from 6 to 15% of the selling price excluding tax on the book.<\/p>\n

    Check the percentage that concerns the paper book, and that of the book in digital format.\u00a0And increasingly, in audio format.<\/p>\n

    Copyrights can operate by thresholds. For example 8% for the first 500 books, then 12% for the following books. This system is set up to help the publisher to amortize the first costs, and to encourage the author to carry out his own promotion of the book.<\/p>\n

    The author percentage amount is always lower for first novels or authors with limited circulation. Publishing is a volume business, and the publisher needs to sell a certain number of books to cover his costs.<\/p>\n

    Very few authors go beyond 13%.\u00a0These are essentially the best-known writers, or sensational books (political releases, event books linked to a personality or a subject, etc.).<\/p>\n
