Of the Roman writers of comedy, Plautus was the more sophisticated. He was born of good family and was well–educated. He wrote more than twenty plays, of which only six have survived. His comedies were mostly adapted from Greek originals. Plautus was the first Roman writer to use rhyme in his plays. He also introduced the Roman gods into his comedies. His plays were very popular in his own day and are still performed today.
