The Magna Carta, also known as the Great Charter, is a charter agreed to by King John of England at Runneymede, near Windsor, on 15 June 1215. The charter was annulled by Pope Innocent III, leading to the First Barons’ War. Magna Carta was the first document forced onto a King of England by a group of his subjects, the feudal barons, in an attempt to limit his powers by law and protect their privileges. The charter later formed the basis for the English Constitution. This document is one of the most celebrated in the history of England and of liberty.
