Nathaniel Hawthorne is best known for his novel The Scarlet Letter, which tells the story of Hester Prynne, a woman who is publicly humiliated for committing adultery. However, Hawthorne actually preferred another book to The Scarlet Letter. The book, titled The House of the Seven Gables, was published in 1851 and is considered to be one of Hawthorne’s best works.
The House of the Seven Gables is a Gothic novel that tells the story of the Pyncheon family, who are cursed after they illegally obtained land from an innocent man. The novel is full of dark themes and is considered to be one of the first American psychological novels. While The Scarlet Letter is a great novel, Hawthorne clearly preferred The House of the Seven Gables.
